My wife has remodeled our bedroom. She also wants to add a new bigger chest of drawers and a fancy big dresser. Now we want to put a big screen television with at least a forty-two inch screen. The problem with a big standard screen or even the new flat screen television of that size is that they are bulky and extremely heavy. This would also necessitate another piece of furniture in an already-crowded room.

The great American entertainment machine has been operating since before any of us was born. It began in the early 20th century and has been chugging along ever since. And the so the mediums have grown, flourishing each in their own way, but eventually overlapping as any good medium does. Literature has been around since the dark ages, but we turned it into an industry. Theater became disposable, vaudevillian and therefore mass produced throughout the country. Then came film and soon afterward television.

This November, my wife and I broke a taboo so morally reprehensible, they’ve never even discussed it on the “Jerry Springer Show”. We canceled our cable TV.

Believe it or not, it was really an easy decision that didn’t require the usual anguish and hand wringing associated with other major family decisions such as whether or not a trip to visit relatives should really count as a vacation.

Television viewing has certainly changed over the years. From black and white to color in the early days, to the ever increasing size of screens more recently, the home viewing experience is improving. The more recent quest has been focused on increasing picture quality with better color accuracy and clarity. As a consumer, it can be difficult to keep up with all of the terminology and the features of the various types of televisions. For those who have not dedicated time to keep up with this changing world of television, a very brief overview is in order to help in the search for a great picture.

The Parents Television Council (PTC) has been a watchdog of family values on television since it was founded in 1995 by longtime political activist L. Brent Bozell III. It is a US-based nonprofit organization which aims to “restore television to its roots as an independent and socially responsible entertainment medium”. The group’s stance if officially nonpartisan in nature, but it is known for taking a conservative stand on sensitive matters. It has embarked on a number of highly-visible undertakings, including cable choice for family-friendly networks, exposing advertisers that advertise on objectionable programming and calling attention to the disrespect of religion on television.

Lakers @ Knicks: This has to be the first time in years that these two teams aren’t playing each other on national television. It shows how New York and LA, the two biggest markets in the League, don’t necessarily have the best teams. That would certainly be the case 20, 30 years ago.
